The Google Blog of a Google Consultant

Thorntons canonical now live! Okay, finally, there are some (two, to be precise, at the time of blogging) entries in Google for the canonical form of the Thorntons site. So, in this real-life experiment in site triplication and canonical locations how long do we have to wait until Thorntons no longer gives us chocolates in Google?

Which is precisely what Thorntons have just done (see 30th Nov entry). So now we have three versions for every Thorntons.co.uk web page live and being spidered by Google. In addition they have created a known problem for Google with a canonical domain resolving.

mmm
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:mmm.thorntons.co.uk&filter=0

www
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:www.thorntons.co.uk&filter=0

canonical (watch this space):
http://www.google.com/search?&q=site%3Athorntons.co.uk+-www+-mmm+-weddings

Left unfixed this is certain to cause them problems with their site's performance in Google. Hopefully this public discussion of doesn't alert them to the problem, as I'd like to see how quickly it hurts them. Sorry if that sounds uncharitable. I am sure we will all buy enough chocolates this Christmas, with or without them in the SERPs!
